Flashback Friday: Our CEO's First Brush with CMN Hospitals

Today's Flashback Friday comes directly from our new CEO, John Lauck. John joined the CMN Hospitals family in January of this year, but had his first interaction with our organization many years ago. We asked him to "flash back" and share this memory with all of you.

The Lauck Family Waits to Go On Stage During the National Telethon

My first experience with CMN Hospitals began in 1990 when Pizza Hut became a Corporate Sponsor. I can't remember the specifics of the promotion, but I do recall that we had a four-week in-store promotion that raised a modest amount of funds.

I had the privilege that year of presenting the check on the national Telethon, which was then held live from Disneyland. Not one to pass up an opportunity to mix business with family vacation, my wife Alison and our four sons accompanied me to make the check presentation. We had a delightful day as guests of Disneyland and - with the exception of a fussy 5-month-old - we endured the long lines and ate lots of junk food.

As the time approached for our fifteen-seconds-of-fame slot on the Telethon, we changed from vacation clothes to our Sunday best. My two oldest sons, Ryan and Alan (then 9 and 6 years old), would accompany me as I made the check presentation to Merlin Olsen. We had alerted our family, friends and all of my work associates of our brief moment of national notoriety. I was excited and proud of the opportunity to show off my well behaved sons and corporate philanthropy.

Finally, the moment arrived. As we waited for our cue to walk across the stage and present an oversized cardboard check to Merlin, Alan (who was later diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder) jumped the gun and ran across the stage.  To my horror, he began jumping up and down, yelling and wrestling with the electrical cords that had been carefully taped to the stage floor. Merlin did his best to bring my sugar-amped 6-year-old under control. I drug Ryan in one hand, monster cardboard check in the other quickly across the stage to subdue Alan.

It was a fiasco and all I can remember from that point was that it took an eternity before we were all off the stage and safe from the scrutiny of national humiliation and scorn. I was sure my reputation, career and autograph opportunity with Merlin Olsen and Marie Osmond were now ruined. The rest of our day at Disneyland was a dark cloud. I threatened to ground Alan for the rest of his life.

Before we left the park to head for our hotel, I stopped by the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals courtesy suite to apologize. Embarrassed and angry, I pleaded with a staffer to extend my apologies to everyone, when he told me that during our section of Telethon, the studio had lost transmitting power and our little performance never made it on the air. Relief!

Alan is now 27, the center of attention and still hyper. I recently reminded him of our Disneyland Telethon disaster. He laughed and said, "See Dad, I told you that you got the CMN Hospitals job because of me!"

What Having a Brain Injury Means to Me

Solo New Jersey
About a year ago I met an incredible girl. She’s 11, lives in New Jersey and can sing Ke$ha songs better than, well, Ke$ha.

Mackenzie was one of our 2010 New Jersey Champions. She and her brother Michael represented the state in our annual Champions program. They had been treated at Children’s Specialized Hospital after surviving a horrific car accident that put them both in comas, and ultimately left them both with brain injuries they’ll live with for their entire lives.

I’ve loved staying in touch with Mackenzie and her family through Facebook. Recently, she tagged me in a Note she wrote on Facebook, “What having a brain injury means to me.”

I sat at my computer, just crying as I read it. I feel so blessed to know this family, and so inspired by what they have survived and continue to survive. Mackenzie and her brother Michael (as well as every other children’s hospital patient I meet) are a reminder to me of why supporting children’s hospitals is so important. They are living miracles.

Mackenzie (and her parents) agreed to let me share her Facebook Note with the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals family on our blog. I hope it touches you as much as it did me.

What Having a Brain Injury Means to Me

today in therapy with miss karen she asked me to write down what having a brain injury means to me. so I wrote these things down:

im not as smart as you

im special in a few more ways than average

im different

im not as independent as you

i need special help

im more sensitive than you

my body works different than yours

i get bullied more than you

i need special care

i don’t get along with some of your friends

im handicapped

i need to go to therapy

i make a few more mistakes than you

BUT DESPITE ALL THESE……I AM THE SAME!

Flashback Friday: "The Hoff" Helps Kids

We have enjoyed celebrity support since the beginning. In fact, we were founded by two celebrities in 1983.  Since that time, hundreds of celebrities have appeared on our annual Telethon or offered their support in other ways.

Here is David Hasselhoff with a Miracle Child at our annual Telethon event in one of our early years. For us, it was the year of “The Hoff.”

Flashback Friday: Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Merrill Osmond at the 1986 Telethon

Since 1983 when Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals first entered the fundraising scene, our Telethons program has helped raise billions (yes, billions) of dollars for 170 children’s hospitals throughout North America. These funds go a long way in helping sick children on their road to recovery.

Many celebrities have leant their star power to our Telethon and fundraising efforts, and 1986 was no exception.

Malcolm Jamal Warner-Merrill Osmond

That year, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Merrill Osmond (along with the rest of the Osmond crew) joined us at our Telethon to celebrate hundreds of thousands of dollars raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Making Birdies, Saving Lives

Today marks the launch of Jim Furyk’s Miracle Birdie program. If you don’t know who Jim Furyk is, you’re missing out on watching one of today’s most incredible golfers. Not only was he the 2010 PGA TOUR Player of the Year, he’s also a huge supporter of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals! That’s why we partnered with him to create Miracle Birdies, a new program that will help raise money for kids at our hospitals all across North America.

For those of you who don’t know what a “birdie” is in golf, it’s pretty simple. Every hole in golf has an expected number of strokes it should take for an expert golfer to finish that hole – that number is called par. “Birdie” is the term for when someone gets the ball into the hole one stroke under par. So if a hole is a Par-3 (meaning it should take three strokes to go from the tee to the hole), and someone completes that hole in two strokes, they score a birdie. It’s a very good thing in golf.

CMN Hospitals Jim Furyk

By the way, Furyk gets a lot of birdies, which is going to be a very good thing for our children’s hospitals.

This year, Furyk is turning every birdie into a Miracle Birdie—and you can join in the fun! To participate, visit www.miraclebirdies.com and pledge to donate 10 cents or more for every birdie Furyk hits between the Verizon Heritage (April 21 – 24, 2011), which, by the way, Furyk won last year, and the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic (October 20 – 23, 2011). Keeping in the tradition of “keeping funds raised local,” you get to designate the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital that you would like to benefit from your pledges.

Then sit back and watch Furyk do all the hard work.

As the birdies add up, so do the donations for kids. So whether you’re a huge Furyk fan or you want to help change a child’s life, make your pledge today for the Miracle Birdies program and support Furyk during the 2011 season. You can also follow Miracle Birdies on Twitter and Facebook.

And remember: every birdie is a Miracle Birdie this season.

How Your Donated Delta SkyMiles Help

IMG_7873

Millions of SkyMiles are donated to our hospitals each year through Delta’s SkyWish program. Just this past March, donated SkyMiles helped transport John, 1, from Uganda to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

John had a fatal congenital heart defect and couldn’t receive the care he needed in Uganda. The Gift of Life, a program that addresses the needs of children who suffer from heart defects, and Delta Air Lines made it possible for him to travel to Memphis to undergo surgery with talented doctors at Le Bonheur.

But Delta didn’t stop there. John and his mother arrived at the Memphis airport on the same day of his 1st birthday and Delta employees held a small birthday celebration for him.

On March 31, John underwent heart surgery and is currently recovering. His life was truly saved because of the SkyMiles that were donated through Delta’s SkyWish program.

You can help Delta Air Lines and CMN Hospitals touch more children just like John by donating your SkyMiles today.

Celebrating our Partners: Walmart

When it comes to making miracles for kids, no one does it like our partners.

One of our longest relationships is with the Walmart Foundation, which has helped raise $530 million for our children’s hospitals since the partnership began in 1987. Just last year, it helped raise more than $30 million for CMNHospitals.  The efforts of Walmart and Sam’s Club customers, members and associates go a long way to help better the lives of millions of sick kids and their families every year.

But Walmart’s kindness doesn’t stop with CMNHospitals. Last week, Walmart announced  it donated $732 million in cash and in-kind gifts to non-profits from February 1, 2010 to January 31, 2011, which represents a 57 percent increase when compared to Walmart’s charitable donations the fiscal year before. This kind of giving is unparalleled in corporate America and we applaud their generosity to children’s hospitals and other important charities. We are extremely proud to have Walmart be a part of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals family.

Check presentation

Walmart and Sam’s Club will continue this tradition of charity when they kick off their annual fundraising campaign for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals on May 1st, with a goal to raise $20 million in just six weeks.

So mark your calendar today, then be sure to stop by your local Walmart or Sam’s Club and make a donation to a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital near you.

Because when you give a little, you give a lot.

Flashback Friday: Steve Young and President Clinton in 1996

Every year, as part of the Champions program, one child from each state visits Washington, D.C., and traditionally stops by the White House for a brief tour and to meet with the President, Vice President, or First Lady.

  Steve Young:Bill Clinton

We found this photo in our archives of Steve Young and President Bill Clinton in the East Room of the White House as part of the Champions program in 1996. Steve has been an active supporter of CMN Hospitals for more than 20 years.
